Stuart’s Obituary
Stuart Miklas Remick, 37, was killed in an avalanche while backcountry skiing in Myoko, Japan on February 28, 2024. Stuart was born on November 7, 1986 to Robin and Daniel Remick and lovingly raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan alongside his two sisters, Andrea and Jaclyn. He died far too young, but packed so much life into his 37 years.
As a kid, Stuart was quick to make friends and was involved in many activities. He played soccer, ran cross country, played various instruments, followed Phish on tour, studied Latin, and loved the outdoors. He spent many summers at the Ann Arbor YMCA camp Al-Gon-Quian (AGQ) in Burt Lake, MI as a camper and then as staff. He loved AGQ - a place that allowed him to be silly, caring, and adventurous. Stuart graduated from Pioneer High School in 2005 and earned his BA in Screen Arts and Cultures with a concentration in screenwriting from University of Michigan in 2009, studying abroad in Prague his final semester. He remained a steadfast Michigan fan throughout his life.
After college he lived in New York City, before tiring of the large city and moving to Blue Mountain Lake, New York. He integrated himself in the small community, even becoming a volunteer firefighter. While the volunteer role lacked action, it made for a good story.
In 2012 Stuart moved to Toyota, Japan to teach English. Japan suited him and he quickly worked on learning the language. After 2 years, he moved to Tokyo and began working for Artiza Networks as the marketing communications manager and assisted in technical translation. Always looking for a new challenge, he began selling tacos in Tokyo, first on his bike and later from a food truck that he helped to build. Taco Tora was a labor of love and as usual, Stuart became one of the most interesting people that anyone knew - the Michigan boy selling tacos in Tokyo.
During this time, he met Akiko, who would become his partner in love, life, and home remodeling for the final 5 years of his life.
Despite learning how to ski at Mt. Brighton, a glamorous landfill-turned-ski hill in southeastern Michigan, Stuart developed a deep passion for backcountry skiing while living in Japan. Again tiring of a large city, he left Tokyo for Myoko, Japan, a small mountain community where he could spend as much time as possible skiing. Once more, Stuart charted his own career path, and he purchased a home and self-renovated it, with help from Akiko, turning it into a 4 bedroom rental property for the ski and snowboarding tourists that flock to Myoko during the winter. Fumoto House welcomed its first guests in early 2023 and was widely felt to be among the best Airbnb homes in town. Stuart and Akiko also purchased a small house by Lake Nojiri in Nagano and had begun to renovate this into their dream home.
Stuart's impact on those fortunate enough to be in his orbit was undeniable. His intelligence, wit, charisma, charm, and thoughtfulness made for deep, meaningful relationships. Throughout his entire life, people were drawn to Stuart. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, friend, and partner, who will be missed by so many.
Stuart is survived by his partner, Akiko, his parents Robin and Dan, his sisters Andrea (Kip) and Jaclyn (John), his nephew and nieces Miklas, Olina, Eliza, and Nadia, and his many friends in the US and Japan.
